Successful run of Big Yellow projects comes to completion
Sisk completes a run of 6 new build developments for market leading storage provider
John Sisk & Son Ltd (Sisk), one of the largest construction groups in the UK and Ireland, has completed the latest in a sequence of storage developments for Big Yellow, the market leading provider of self storage facilities in the UK.
The 6 developments have been built over a period of 4 years at the following locations: Bristol, Gloucester, Fulham, Sheen, Liverpool and Twickenham.
The Twickenham location is the latest to open as a fully operational unit, and signals the strength of the partnership between Sisk and Big Yellow, as part of its ongoing development pipeline in the UK.
Sisk was chosen as the contractor based on its expertise and project experience of handling basement level builds. The sites at Fulham, Sheen and Twickenham required complex engineering works to overcome the high level of contamination, the level of the ground water, and close proximity of neighbouring properties.
The Twickenham location, in the shadow of the famous Rugby stadium, had an extensive programme of ground and groundwater decontamination work, due to the previous use of the site. An existing 1200mm sewer and culverted river also had to be diverted as part of the scheme.
Big Yellow currently operates a portfolio of 55 UK stores. It has more under development and Sisk are in close communication with Big Yellow to construct the complex basement schemes. The self storage company has ambitious plans to expand its portfolio, with the development program aiming to add a further 1.0million sq ft to its current 3.5million sq ft.
Les Nicholls, Director Western Region, Sisk commented:
“This completes a great run of successful projects throughout the country for Big Yellow, I am delighted Sisk is working with such a dynamic and fast growing organisation. Some of the builds have been engineering challenges at basement level, but engineering challenges is one part that Sisk does extremely well. I was pleased to hand over the keys of the Twickenham store on time.”
Nigel Hartley, Construction Director, Big Yellow added:
“Sisk has provided solutions to our sites where there have been building challenges and constraints. With its proactive and hands on approach, delivering exactly what we asked for, in the time we wanted, Sisk has helped us keep to our schedule of planned expansion throughout the UK.”
