Work begins on The Shard’s hotel in the sky
Hong Kong based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has selected British contractor John Sisk & Son to fit out their luxury new hotel, with work already underway. Housed in Europe’s tallest building at 1017 feet, the five star hotel will occupy floors 34-52 out of a total of 72, with public spaces, restaurants and 500,000 sq ft of office space below it and 62,000 sq ft of residential apartments and a public observatory above.
Anthony Draper, Senior Project Manager at Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, added:
“This project is not only about delivering a premier hotel – this is a landmark project for Shangri-La and our first hotel venture in the UK.
This appointment is the result of an intensive procurement process, extensive research and competitive tendering to find a trusted partner who clearly demonstrated a proven capability of delivering the standards synonymous with the Shangri-La brand. As a result of their extensive five star building experience, together with being able to deal with the logistical constraints that working in the Capital can bring, John Sisk & Son give us the assurances we are seeking. In addition their understanding of hotel pre-opening activities gives us confidence that their focus is on quality and service delivery.”
The prestigious project will see the fit-out of 202 guest rooms and suites across the 18 floors, and includes a signature luxury spa, fitness facility and ‘’The Bar’’ in Shangri-La on the 52nd floor. Its guest rooms will be amongst the largest in London, with some suites featuring glass-enclosed ‘winter garden’ balconies. Guests will enjoy panoramic views of the London cityscape, experience fine dining in its international restaurant, and benefit from comprehensive amenities. The bottom two floors of the hotel will house the restaurant, ‘food theatre’ café and bars, as well function rooms with a seating capacity of 300.
As well as the guest areas of the hotel, John Sisk & Son will deliver the back of house facilities in two of The Shard’s three basements, and on the hotel floors themselves. Shangri-La is committed to providing quality facilities for not only their guests, but their staff too and as a consequence this will be reflected in the standard of provision to these areas as well. Works will also include the installation of all kitchens, mechanical and electrical works, and state of the art business and communication technology throughout.
Paul Wilson, Managing Director of John Sisk & Son, commented:
“Working together with Shangri-La to deliver their unique hospitality experience in London is a project we are very excited about. Shangri-La offers a distinctive and luxurious style of service, and the Shard will complement this experience with its breath-taking views.
Working on The Shard, at such a height and with restricted access and storage space, will require exceptional project management and logistical organisation from our team to elevate the materials and fittings to the hotel and operate efficiently alongside other contractors working on the rest of the building. Hotel construction is one of our key areas of excellence and we are delighted to be working with Shangri-La on such a landmark project.”
Shangri-La has 72 five-star luxury hotels located in premier city addresses across Asia, the Middle East, North America and Europe. It is Asia Pacific's leading luxury hotel group and is regarded as one of the world’s finest hotel ownership and management companies.
