John Sisk & Son helps Canning Town children prepare school garden for winter
John Sisk & Son has worked with children and teachers from St. Luke’s Primary School in Newham to get their garden ready for the winter.
The company spent a day at the school with Churchman Landscape Architects and Munnelly Support Services helping children learn new skills through a series of workshops. The children, kitted out in safety helmets and hi-visibility vests, helped to prepare the eco garden, select suitable plants for the winter months and paint school fences.
The Rosetta Art Centre, which is working with John Sisk & Son on a series of projects to build links between Newham companies and the local community, also ran a painting workshop where children decorated plates and ceramic plant pots for the garden.
The day was part of Sustainability Week, an initiative launched in 2009 to help staff engage with communities near its construction sites through activities that help local residents and improve their environment.
St. Luke’s head teacher Theresa Aanonson said: “The workshops were a huge success and the children loved the fun and interactive activities. It’s great that John Sisk & Son and their partners could give the children a chance to participate in the regeneration of our area by teaching them how to improve and take care of their surroundings.”
John Sisk & Son senior contracts manager Chris Harrison added: “We are pleased to have the opportunity to engage the children in these projects and teach them how to continue caring for their garden. We have done a number of different projects during Sustainability Week and particularly enjoy running events for children to help them understand the value of their local area from a young age.”
